BIOGRAPHY

Rob Hogg is currently serving his second term as state representative from House District 38 in parts of southeast and northeast Cedar Rapids.  He was first elected in 2002, and was reelected  in 2004.  He has served on the education, public safety, environment, and ways and means committees, and the economic development budget subcommittee.  In 2005, he was selected as the Legislator of the Year by the Older Iowans Legislature.

FAMILY

Rob is a fourth generation Iowan.  He was born in Iowa City in 1967.  Rob's wife, Kate, is a native of California who came to Iowa to attend Grinnell College.  They have three children, Robert, Dorothy, and Isabel. 

Rob's father, Bob Hogg, was a professor of math and statistics at the University of Iowa for 51 years, retiring in 2000. His mother, Carolyn Ladd Hogg, taught math and English in public schools in Iowa and then devoted herself to raising her four children. She died in 1990. One of his grandfathers, Mason Ladd, was long-time Dean of the Iowa Law School, and his great grandfather, Scott Ladd, served on the Iowa Supreme Court.

EDUCATION

Rob graduated from City High School in Iowa City in 1985, and then attended the University of Iowa, graduating with a degree in history in 1988. In 1991, Rob earned a master's degree in energy policy from the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute for Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. In 1995, Rob earned a law degree from the University of Minnesota.

PROFESSIONAL

After law school, Rob clerked for the Honorable Donald P. Lay, Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Rob then practiced at a law firm, Leonard, Street and Deinard, in the Twin Cities.  In 1998, Rob and Kate moved home to Iowa, where Rob clerked for the Honorable Michael J. Melloy, then Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa in Cedar Rapids.  Since 2000, Rob has practiced law with the firm of Elderkin & Pirnie, P.L.C., in Cedar Rapids, where he represents both businesses and individuals in a variety of matters.

COMMUNITY

Rob and Kate and their family are members of Christ Episcopal Church in northeast Cedar Rapids where they are active in Sunday School, youth choir, and outreach.  Rob has served as a member of the board of directors for Churches United of Linn County since 2002.  Rob previously served as chair of the Cedar Wapsie Group of the Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club in 2000-2001 and as global warming project coordinator for Ecumenical Ministries of Iowa in 1999-2000.  Rob and Kate are also members of Indian Creek Nature Center where Kate is active in the Guild.  Rob and Kate are both active volunteers at their children'
s schools, including Monroe, Erskine, and McKinley, and with their children's sports teams.
